Beating the Sedentary Lifestyle: Keep Moving.

After a week looking at this topic, I’d like to leave you with some final thought and summarize some of the ideas I’ve been exploring. At the heart of this issue, we need to acknowledge that human beings are designed for movement. So many modern health issues have grown to near epidemic status due purely to the fact that we do not grant this biological trait.

If you can keep moving, you can stay healthy. I suppose this is true of your mindset too, but that’s a topic for another day. Stasis (physical or mental) encourages laziness; this becomes harder and harder to overcome as we allow that to grow. When a person looks at their weight on the scale, they may see things they dislike but believe that it’s too hard to change. Breaking that static mindset is possibly the hardest part of the process and it causes many people to abandon their fitness goals before they even begin.

The other major issue is that some of us are waiting for all the perfect conditions to go and work out. We may say to ourselves “I’m going to work out tomorrow after I get a good sleep tonight and have enough energy.”, but the problem is the perfect time to work out is right now. It’s not tomorrow when you think you’re going to have more energy or feel more motivated, make it happen regardless of how tired you feel.

I feel like this is the obvious problem with things like diets, detoxes and new years resolutions. We allow ourselves to buy into this narrative that says “It’s okay to start it tomorrow.” honestly, fuck that. If I hadn’t forced myself to get to training every day; even when I knew I was going to suck, when I was tired, unfit and unmotivated, I have no doubt in my mind that I would not be here to write this today (such was the state of my mental/ physical health and how quickly I was allowing it to deteriorate as a young man).

So, go do it today and stop making excuses, we have enough challenges facing us without having to create any more for ourselves. Get to the gym, join a class, be on time and then just keep doing it & don’t stop. If you stop, you will be punished. This isn’t some carrot versus the stick scenario; if you stop moving and allow your health/fitness/well being to diminish, it will only have negative outcomes and only you are responsible for how those affect you. Your biology will beat you with a stick mercilessly for rejecting it.

Choose movement, choose fitness, choose life.

Thanks to everyone who has followed this series of articles. I hope that in some way it has made you reflect on your own lifestyle and potentially even helped you to make some positive changes within your own routines. I strongly encourage anyone who has read these and is struggling in some way (or even if you aren’t) to get in touch and have a chat. I’d love to talk to you.

Thanks for reading!
